WHEN FICTION BECOMES REALITY

by Carla R. Galego

Suddenly, it seems like we're living inside the plot of a Netflix series. A world that we would only watch on TV or read in a novel has become our reality.

Remember when we used to watch TV series about dystopias and fictions concerning the future, and think how crazy that was? I recall watching a post-apocalyptical series called The Rain - where a deadly virus contaminated by the rain made people stuck in bunkers for years - and imagining how terrifying that should be. Well, the future has arrived for us, and crazy as it is, has turned the life we knew upside down.

In the last few months, we have been living the most unimaginable and confusing time ever. Similarly to the series I mentioned, a terrible virus has spread all around the world, and everyone is stuck inside their houses without knowing when it’s going to be safe to be out again. In this brand new world, the simplest and more natural things have become dangerous, like a mere walk to the supermarket or hugging a friend.

With nothing else to do, we try to hold on to a new kind of normality which is far away from what we used to call "normal.” So, we keep our phones and gadgets even closer, we get used to seeing our friends and family through a screen, we attempt to adapt our work from home, creating a routine for the new era, while trying to stay positive about the future. And, even though it is hard for us to adapt, we tell ourselves to keep in mind what a great privilege that is, for many people can't do the same.

Such as the characters from The Rain, we have plenty of time to think about the life behind us and miss even the banal stuff that used to bore us, like taking a test in school. And also like them, we don't know how the next episode is going to be like.
