Hi, guys! In our last post, we talked about English Literature Classics, when we suggested some readings to you. Today, we would like to explain the difference between two terms: English literature and British literature; after, we will also suggest new readings.

Firstly, English literature. It refers to all the literature written in English, the authors do not need to be from England. They can be from Scotland, India, the United States, Nigeria, and other countries. So, English literature just needs to be written in English.

British literature is the literature from the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Channel Islands. Most of British literature is written in English, but it is not necessary to be written in this language.

To introduce them, we will first approach literary works written in the English language in general. Starting with Australia, we brought for you the author of the bestseller “The Book Thief”, Markus Zusak. We also have Nigeria with Ayobami Adebayo and the Indian author Kamala Markandaya to suggest.

Now let's talk about the English literature, which focused around the United Kingdom, therefore, British. Some consecrated works in this topic are the ones written by Shakespeare, an English author. And ultimately, another example of English literature related to the United Kingdom are the novels of the Irish author James Joyce, considered a great writer of the 20th century. His leading books are “Ulysses”, “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” and “Finnegans Wake”.
