Recently, a new edictal was launched to select graduates of our English Language course, for participation in the Pibid and Pedagogical Residency teaching projects. Both projects were previously present on our campus, and its main objective is to encourage the training of teachers at a higher level for Basic Education. However, such projects have some differences, with Pibid being directed to students of the 1st and 2nd years, and the Pedagogical Residence for students of the 3rd and 4th years.

Professor Ana Paula, who is at the head of PIBID, stressed that the greatest quality of the project in the degree course is the opportunity to experience school practice, aligned with readings and discussions on the perspectives of teaching and learning languages. According to her: “In addition to school practice, we take a theoretical and practical look at educational policies in Brazil and the inclusion of foreign languages in school education, as well as the interests they serve and how they affect learners in the school realities that the Program serves in Apucarana. Particularly in English, academics are encouraged to ask themselves: Why learn English? Why teach English? What is involved in the process of learning/teaching English? Who talks about teaching? And about English language learning? What is English teaching and learning? And culture? Is it politics? Is it power? Is it grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation? Is it language? Is it humanity?”

The vision I was able to obtain as a former student and future teacher in different school contexts, substantially incorporated my teaching background. From class observations to interventions, each moment provided reflections that would not be possible outside of it. I have in my mind readings that have enriched my academic life and, in my heart, people who have cheered every moment within the program.

“More than a teacher training program, for me, it is a program of humanization and respect for the other; it is an exercise that teaches you to listen, to understand, first of all, so that you know how to interact, plan to teach and be constantly reminded that teaching is an eternal learning...” added Professor Ana Paula.

Mariana, a student from the course, gave us a testimonial about her experience at PIBID. Mariana said: “My experience with Pibid can be called fruitful. It was comforting to arrive at the school practicum with ideas and experiences from Pibid.”

My latest projects

As for the Pedagogical Residence project, it is, according to the professor and coordinator Raquel Silvano, a kind of a sequence to PIBID that contemplates the final years of the course. When students are already at school practicum, it provides 414 hours of residency divided into three modules of three semesters, in which the resident knows more about the school being guided by the preceptor teacher, participating in various activities of the school routine. In this stage, the student has the opportunity to practice the licentiate degree, enabling the relationship between theory and professional teaching practice.

Professor Raquel also commented that this year we have the appointment of eight scholarship residents for the program and also two volunteer residents. The enrollments for the Pedagogical Residence project that would take place between the 5th and 22nd of June were extended until the 25th of June.
