TRANSLATION: TEXTS AND CONTEXTS

Hello, how are you? Today we will talk about the research project “Translation: texts and contexts”, by Professor Simone de Souza Burguês.

The project aims to study translation theories, offering the participant a foundation to support the theory and knowledge of different textual genres. It also aims to study the relationships between texts and their contexts, and discuss the importance of this knowledge for professionals in the field of Language. The overall focus is to make the student aware of current worldwide translation trends.
Professor Simone told us that the idea for the project came about because of a “gap” in the projects offered by the English Language course, considering a really present demand which is translation. “There are always students bringing the issue of translation to us, or to answer a question about something the student is translating (abstracts, articles, etc.) or any particular question about translation, such as what is a sworn translator or how to do subtitling”. In view of these demands and the professor’s interest and formation in translation, she decided to start the project.

Second year English Language student Viviane Vargas gave us a statement about her participation: “Professor Simone's translation project has given theoretical bases on the translation process and its demands. Some texts about the history of translation and the complexity of this work were brought, which not only requires knowledge of the language, but that the professional understands the context in which the texts were written”.

We are currently in the practical stage of the project, which consists of translating some texts available on the Unespar website. These contain information about the university, professors, as well as the projects they develop with the students. The translation is carried out and Professor Simone evaluates the productions developed with the students. It has been very interesting and it is definitely covering the area it has proposed, giving the students the support basis to perform this role.

Carlos Eduardo, also a student from the 2nd year of English Language, told us a little about his participation in the project: “I decided to participate in the project because I have always been interested in working with translation. The project has helped me to acquire a larger vocabulary and is also giving me a little insight into what it's like to be a translator”. Carlos also added that he certainly indicates the participation of those interested in this area!
