CAPE TOWN

In this slightly different “Bits of Culture”, we are bringing a unique opportunity for those who want to learn or improve their English in a totally meaningful way: you check the University of Cape Town, where there is “Language Excursions”, a partnership with Kuru’s English project, who has been working on English teaching for 12 years.

“Language Excursions” presents a unique way to work with the students: they go on tours (in which their teacher is the guide), and, by getting in touch with multiple cultures and other societies, they can have the experience required to practice English language.

Events held in Cape Town welcome the exchange students to have this contact with others and with English as much as possible. It is an exceptional opportunity to improve the learning process while leaning new, diverse, and great people.

“Language Excursions” takes place three afternoons a week (20 lessons) in the morning, being each excursion with a different theme and providing authentic and relevant language materials to prepare all the students for the adventure. General data about the whole program is shown below:

General English: Monday to Friday 9:00 – 12:50

Language Excursion: Tuesday to Thursday 13:50 – 16:10

Lessons per week: 30

Taking part in this program will allow you not only to meet the people from Cape Town, but also to talk with English speakers, combine theory with practice, build intercultural competence, become an international communicator, be confident to speak fluently and use English in real-life contexts, practicing it socially.

The meaning of the project’s name:

“Kurus” is a word in Nama, the language of the Khoi, the indigenous people of Africa. Humankind, as far as we know, has its roots and origins in Africa. Our roots lead back to the Khoi and the San. The South African motto is “Unity and Diversity” written in Nama and to have this ancient African name in the Nama language fits perfectly into our concept of language, culture and discovery.

Kurus in English means “creation”, and, furthermore, “things made, especially by means of skill or intelligence; out of nothing, only from inside”.
